This issue was quite interesting to me. For one thing, there is the picture of Westby House. This was taken shortly after my return from the Navy, so this is the community household that I joined and would be a part of for the next 6 years. Of course, during that six years there were many changes in the composition of the household.
The trip to England was a big deal in our church. It was not only a lengthy trip, but it was a relatively large team -- or two teams -- from the church. For me, it also meant that Ken was gone from the household for a lengthy time. I had to assume leadership while he was gone. To be sure, everyone knew how to live without my input, but I felt the pressure anyway. We had a big project at the house. We actually started before Ken left, but the majority was done during the time that the team was in England. This was known as THE WALL. We had a large sloping back yard. To facilitate the growth of some fruit trees and minimize runoff during rains, we terraced the back yard. At each terrace point a three foot retaining wall had to be built. All of the males participated in the digging of trenches and the pouring of the foundation. The masonry aspect didn't need a lot of hands -- it needed experienced hands. We got one experienced mason. This was Glenn Frehafer (see the issue -- he was just baptized). I was his helper. We spent a lot of hours on the wall.
My wife was actively involved in caring for Joshua -- the young infant who was under the care of Jacque Johns (no Mays), who later adopted him. I mentioned in an earlier post that we had become a foster home for Joshua. Of course Linda, who loved babies, really enjoyed being "mother". In fact it was difficult to give him up when the team got back.
Ken's articles were an interesting juxtaposition. His main article labeled us as an invasion force on the city of Chula Vista. This is not an unusual picture of the Kingdom of God invading the Principalities of our world system. Then the picture of another subversive group, Communism. Of course the operative word was commitment. We really did live with the idea the our first priority was to live for Jesus and His Kingdom.
